The history of music videos;
to help me in creating a music video I carried out some research into old video's and see how they have developed. Looking at Goodwins theory we see more close ups of the artists and also more of the female arent covering up they are embrasing their femininity well. The prezi below shows the research that I carried out..
RESEARCH INTO CONVENTIONS OF A MUSIC VIDEO
I have looked at the theory for music video's by Goodwin. Goodwin proposes a number of things which I am going to use to make a video of my own. One of his six theory's suggests that Music videos demonstrate genre charecteristics; meaning there a certain types of music that use certain types of images or style. This could be a stage preformance for a metal video and then a dance routine for a girl band. The second Theory suggests there is a relationship between the lyrics and the visuals. This can mean three things one being Illustrative were they illusrate what the the lyrics say second it could mean Amplifying; were they exaggerate the lyrics. Then finally it could be Contradicting; were they are contrapuntal to what is being said. Another theory of Goodwin's also is the relationship between the music and the visuals. This is seen by the rhythm, instrumentation and notation create visual interpretation. Goodwin then proposes that the demands of the record label will include the need for lots of close up shots of the artist and the artist may develop motifs which recur across their work, meaning we almost start to expect to see something again and again from them. Then he suggests that there is frequently reference to notion of looking and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body. This could be for example screens within screens. Finally he proposes that there is often intertextual reference were the video may spoof or pay homage to films, tv programs, other music videos etc. He proposes many things about music videos below therefore I have deconstructed a video to see were his theories fit and how they are created.
This print screen is from a video by Paramore were it proves Goodwin's theory by the fact we expect to see a performace from this paticular genre of music. For this reason Paramore are set out on stage with props such as guitars and then they perform to the track.
This video by Mc Hammer; Can't Touch this relates to Goodwin's theory by links between the visuals and the beats of the music. This is created by the dance movements we see being in time with the soundtrack and the artist also sings along with the lyrics.
Goodwin proposes that there should be close ups of the band or artist. This is seen in the video by The Saturdays, each individual band member has a section were they are focused on. This is done so the audience can pick up what they are wearing and how they look so they can do the same. He also proposes the voyertisic treatment of the female body; with females being seen in the mirror, but then also being revealing. A good example of this is Katy Perry; Thinking of you were Kat is seen in short costumes and we see alot of close ups of her body.
Below I have deconstructed the video by Katy Perry further..
DECONSTRUCTION
Baring this in mind I have analysed and discussed elements of the video from Katy Pery- Thinking of you. In this I have talked about what is seen, the convention and also how Goodwin's theory fits in with the video. I presented this and recored what I done. Please look at the video below to see the deconstruction.
I have also looked at a video by Paramore and below briefly deconstrucetd it;
MY CHOSEN TRACK;
Picking a track that would help me to create a good music video was hard and I also needed permission. I decided to choose a band that I knew would love me to use their work. The band I chose were Checking Pulse. Not a well known band however from mailing the lead singer of the band she was happy to let me use on of their tracks to make a music video for. The genre of the music is the music that I like and am interested in so I have a lot of insperation and ideas from other bands like them. The track I have chosen is best girl which is upbeat and has a good story line were I could incorperate some of Goodwin's thories. Below is my chosen track;
PERMISSION;
I made sure that I could use the track by messaging the lead singer Emily Wilson; below is a screen shot of the messages that were sent.
GENRE RESEARCH:
The genre of my band that I am using for my music video is Pop/ Punk. The genre combines elements of punk rock with pop music, to varying degrees. Examples of bands are Green Day and Blink 182. Music started in the mid to late 1970’s. In these recent years the genre has become more popular. The people that listen to the genre of music will have their own unique style. People who will listen to the band would be teenagers both male and female.
Their interests would be going to gigs and socialising. Listening to knew bands and enjoying original music; pop/ punk. They would read mainly magazines like Kerrang as they have the bands in that they will like and the genre they will listen too. The magazine will also give them the latest trends that band members are following; which they will more than likely follow. They will have a fashion style of being very scene; wearing items such as skinny jeans, top buttoned shirts and vans. They will also most likely have big back combed hair and dark makeup. They wouldn't really have interests to go on holiday maybe just if they have their money or go with parents. They will have their own uniques style and be individual.
Bands that remind me and are much like Checking Pulse are bands like Paramore, Green Day or Blink 182. I will be mainly taking my insperation from Paramore as of the band format with the female singer and then the male members. I will be using their videos for insperation and this will help me to get ideas and make an overall good video. Here are some examples below...
To get more of an idea of what the audience that my band are I have carried out some research and created an audience profile. The images allow me to get an idea of what they like, also things such as what they wear and what they look for. This is good because it will help me to stay on the right lines when it comes to creating my own video based around my chosen track.
The reason for chosing the paticular band that I did was becuase I listen to that style of music. I am able to relate to existing muisc videos and products from the particular genre. My social interests wil allow me to create god products as I have already seen products from well known brands such as Kerrang. I knew the track well and have seen the bad live this allowed to get a feel for their personalities and be able to know what there style is and interests. The band allowed me to see them preform which I can use elements of in my own music video. My interests changed alot of what I created as I made it more so for what would appeal to me from that genre, however feedback allowed me to see what I needed to improve on in order to meet genre conventions. As I listen to the style music and often watch videos froms artisits like Paramore this allowed me to see what the genre would expect to see.
RESEARCH INTO DIGI PACKS:
For the project I also need to design a digi pack that will sell an album for my band. There is different elements that I have noticed on digi packs. To make sure that the did pack that I design is good enough and that has included all the correct elements I have researched into a few. The images below is just a few examples of digi packs;

Paramore's album advert has helped me in thinking about designing for my Digi pack because I believed that I needed a picture for my digi pack however I have found through research that this is not the case. The genre albums that I have looked at dont include a image on the front. From this I have decided to take this on board for planning my own Digi pack. By not including a main image I am infitting with my genre.

RESEARCH INTO MAGAZINE ADVERTS;
I am also creating a magazine advert. The same as the digi pack I need to see the various elements to know what to include. I have found that there is always a 3 line system to keep the advert from looking cluttered. I have researched and found some pictures of examples of magazine adverts..

I have also deconstructed a magazine advert on Flikr. This allowed me to gain ideas of things that needed to be exactly layed out. Then theres things like fonts and colours. Please click the link below to see what I completed..

This album makes use of the composition and links this with the text on the advert. The writing has been composed so that it is positioned in between her legs so that there is a clear link between the two which I found quite creative.
This album cover has the aritst taking up most of the composition and it appears that this is the image on the front cover of the album digipack. However, it has been re created so that is has the date of the album release date.
It strangely does not have the name of the artist 'Madonna' however this could be down to the fact that it is not necessarily needed as she is so highly recognised as a successfull pop artist.
What have I found from my research?
The research that I have carried out has allowed me ot see what I need to include and also the conventions that I should follow. The video, digi pack and magazine advert all include elements that are seen throughout each product and elements that show cohession. I noticed conventions such as the rule of 3 in the Magazine advert, this will allow me to follow a structure. Then there was conventions that I noticed from the pop/punk genre like my band. For example the title of my magazine advert needs to be stricking, the title needs to stand out. I need to ensure to include certain elements that are seen in products such as the Digi-Pack I need a track list and a barcode, a website and so on. The products I design and create need to include certain elements and make sure that they work well and link with eachother. From the research I have been able to gain things that will inspire me to create my products. For my music video I have chose to focus on a performance based video as this is what my research showed to be the usual and in doing this I meet audience expectations. Without my research I wouldnt have clear codes and conventions to follow.
